Driving around Bora Bora Island
Beach down the american canon
The program of today is fairly chill – we have booked a scooter to the next-door rental agency.
So after an (expensive) breakfast - which I forgot wasn’t included in our room charges – we went on a tour of the island, which is fairly flat and everywhere you look is never-ending turquoise waters.
I took a lot of pictures but then, none of them really conveys the beauty of the scenery. We stopped first at the American cannons, there is a small fee to pay of XPF 500/pax because you have to cross through private land to access the site.
It’s a short 5min walk up to a nice viewpoint of Mount Otemanu, and then another further 5min to see the canons that the American left at the end of WWII. It’s a short and ok-ish thing to do. There aren’t that much on the island.
As you continue further, there is a path down to a very nice beach that we had for ourselves. So we just enjoyed it and did some snorkeling there before backtracking to the road.
Alexis had picked up on the map that there was a manta cleaning station not far from the coast, so that we could potentially snorkel, up north. We found the spot, because a few boats where there already.
We set ourselves up ( we had picked up fins and also a safety buoy from the hotel ) and swam there. Unfortunately, we were not lucky. But the break was welcome anyway.
Since we were already past lunch time, we continue the tour to arrive at Vaipate where we found a Roulotte, these little shacks on the road side serving simple meals. And for once, we had a very good meal for half the price as what the other two restaurants cost us! We also passed by a supermarket, so we bought supplies for breakfast, we will eat it in our room in the coming days.
On the way back we stopped at a nice ice-cream parlor and then made our way to the bungalow to rest and lazy up the end of the afternoon.
We roasted on this day, and because we sweat a lot, none of our sun screen lasted long. I am a nice lobster color on some odd sections of my body where the cream melted off…
Tonight, we finally understood that THE ONLY Roulotte walking distance from our hotel, had a bell and you needed to ring it to get service and someone coming out of the house behind to get the order. We again managed to get a decently priced (and excellent) meal for diner. As the only affordable option around, I think they will see us often in the coming days.
