Lagoa bonita in Lençóis Maranhenses

We have nothing planned for the morning and that’s perfect. In this accommodation we have a little garden and we enjoy our breakfast at the freshest hours of the morning outside. It’s quiet and very pleasant at this time of day.

We have a lot more work to do to book for Mexico, a lot of the information I had previously researched were outdated and companies I had shortlisted prior to covid are now gone. And that’s what we do this morning at a very lazy pace. 

I also managed to get my friend from Indonesia on the phone, time difference between these two regions are not kind to us and we end up talking and updating each other’s for a good 1 hour ! I was so happy we managed to catch up.

Time to cook a simple meal and get ready for our afternoon tour. We are going back to Lençóis Maranhenses national park, but this time we will see Lagoa Bonita. It’s another area that is accessible for tourists.

The drive to this part of the parc is longer than to Lagoa Azul and a lot less fun too. We saw another jeep stranded; they were stuck in the soft sands. Every jeep passing by got as many passengers as they could and continued on.  We saw the jeep back later on, so I guess they got themselves out and drove their group back later during the day.

In Lagoa Bonita you start at the bottom of the dune, where there are still a lot of vegetation. There is a steep dune to climb and steps have been put in place. But it’s gorgeous once you reach the top. The lagunes are bigger and larger and we have a higher view of all the white dunes. 

We spend the next 2 hours, swimming from lagune to lagune, taking pictures and admiring the view.

There is a lot more people in Lagoa Bonita and it’s harder to escape them – whereas in Lagoa Azul, everyone was more spread out. It’s a much nicer view of the national park though, and pictures look great when you get that frame without anyone in it.

We are staying until the sunset and we climb back up that tallest dune to contemplate. Along with probably 200 to 300 people, but here everyone spread out and sit down. You relax and enjoy the soft lights of the evening on the incredibly white sand. 

I must say the Lençóis Maranhenses national park has that otherworldly landscape that you can’t find anywhere else. It’s genuinely unique. I am happy we went twice there, and enjoyed another beautiful sunset.

We arrive back at the house by 8pm, time to get some of our belongings in order. Tomorrow we are leaving for Sao Luis. \
