First day of scuba diving in Cozumel
Roberta's scuba shack
We look at the breakfast that the hotel provided, it's nice but a key component is missing: bread. There is everything to put on it but for the central element... Oxxo is a 5min short walk away. We can have our nice breakfast now.
It's pretty awesome that we just have to cross the road to get to the dive center. We meet our 5 other dive buddies, all of them are Americans and have been to Cozumel many times. A couple even few times a year. They are nice and we chat the 25min boat ride to our first dive site away.
And then we get into the water. And wow, that's like a genuine aquarium. I have rarely had such great visibility and conditions to dive. The water is not greenish but really nice turquoise blue and very clear. Both dives of the day had the same water quality.
There is a little current, enough to gently drift but not enough so that you can kick against if you find something you would like to observe.
Is easy, pleasant and beautiful under the water. On the things that I find surprising are the lobster here. I swear I saw one that was as big as half my leg. Many are out of their hiding holes and swim in the ocean. It's a rare sight. And they are just sooo big ! They are pacific ones, beautiful blue stripes, no large claws and very nice white tail.
We saw some sleeping nurse sharks on sandy hideouts and a few turtles.
It was an excellent diving day, one so easy and pleasant. It's been a long while since I just floated like this on a slow drift.
It's already 13h30 when we are done diving. And our side of town is suddenly busy. He cruises ships are in Cozumel on Tuesday and Thursday and it's another world in our street. Everything is open, there is a little of traffic and we see a lot of people walking around. The behemoths are actually parked right in front of our dive center and there are 3 of them.
We rent a scooter from our neighbors’ shop and get into town. We start with the post office to send postcards, then finds ourselves a restaurant for lunch. Finally, we head into the supermarket to gather supplies until we leave.
We drive back as the sky gets grey and no sooner had Alexis been back from bringing the scooter to the shop that the downpour starts. Talk about perfect timing.
This is no deterrent to enjoy the rest of the day on the hammock watching the rain and reading my book.
